Banks opt for remote services.

It is now certain that the Covid-19 pandemic has begun affecting every aspect of life. As the month ends and workers go for their salaries, banks have continuously been sending out messages through SMS and other social media platforms, urging subscribers to avoid visiting the banks physically. This is owing to the fact that banks often witness an influx leading to overcrowding, especially at month ends. In one of such messages, a famous Pan African bank wrote; “Dear Customer, we encourage you to use in priority, our distant digital platforms. Leo, Mobile Banking, Magic Banking, Push and Pull, as well as our ATMs. #Stop Covid-19”.

Customers are directed to the online platforms as the banks say they have taken the necessary measures to furnish the platforms with all the information users might need. But this faces a huge challenge as some subscribers are not very internet-friendly and have not used the online platforms before. “I have never been using the mobile banking option because I am not very familiar to it. Moreover, I have not been subscribed to the option. So these announcements will not really help me”, said a bank user.

For his part, Stephane Nana, a Relationship Officer in one of the commercial banks in Yaounde, says they are stepping up efforts at educating customers on the need to make good use of the digital platforms.

Another bank has been sending messages, directing its subscribers to a site where they can locate the nearest Automated Teller Machines ATM in their vicinity. The bank wrote. “Dear customer, click on https://bit.ly//2WBFpXNto obtain the complete list of our ATMs for your withdrawals #StopCorona.”

On yet another message, another bank simply reminds its subscribers that you can now withdraw up to FCFA 500, 000 from our ATMs. No more need to go to a branch #StopCorona”.

All of these are measures adopted by the banks in order not be a trajectory for the deadly coronavirus. Other users have called on the banks to ensure that the ATM machines get disinfected as they could also become death traps.
