Banks called to multiply tellers.
The Minister of Finance, Louis Paul Motaze, has urged banks and other finance institutions to set up more tellers to help reinforce the social distancing measures.
The Minister made the call in a communiqué issued on Wednesday, March 25. According to the communiqué, all finance institutions are required to scrupulously respect the decision. The decision is part of measure put in place by the Ministry to reinforce the 13-point measure outlined by the Prime Minister two weeks ago. The Finance boss has promised severe sanctions to those who will be found flouting the measure.
It is common place to fine long queues, sometimes of more than three hundred persons, waiting to be served from very limited tellers in banks. On Thursday, March 26, barely a day after the communiqué was issued, a long line was still very visible at one of the commercial banks in Yaounde. At another bank, a member of staff confided that they served as many as 1,000 customers daily. Paradoxically, all of these customers are served from just two tellers.
This often creates a scenario where customers get choked up, with distance between persons often reduced to zero. For their part, the banks have launched a campaign, redirecting its customers to Automatic Teller Machines, ATM, and other digital platforms. The campaign is however slightly heeded. A majority of the customers are yet to subscribe to the digital platforms. During an unofficial random sample of some five bank users, only one confirms he is a mobile banking subscriber. And the lone subscriber further indicated that though he has subscribed, he doesn’t do online transactions.
