Transport becoming more expensive in Douala over anti-coronavirus measures.
Douala city dwellers are yet to come to terms with the sudden and sharp increase on commodity prices and transportation fare within the city. From every indication the ordinary citizens are the ones suffering most as a result of the Prime Ministerial measures put in place in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. One of such decisions was the ban on overloading in taxis as well as commercial motorbikes. As a result, the populations have been forced to pay higher than the normal fare. A distance that usually cost CFA 250 on a bike now costs CFA 500 as the commercial motor bike riders complain that they cannot carry more than one person. Consequently, the lone passenger has to pay for two “places”.
As of March 26, Ndokoti-Bonanjo that used to cost CFA 300 now costs CFA 400. One of the taxi drivers plying this stretch of road told reporters that, before the Prime Ministerial decision he was carrying 5 persons on board his taxi which will give him a total of CFA 1500 per trip, but now they are forced to carry only three persons, that is two behind and one in front. “If passengers have to pay the normal CFA 300, I will have only CFA 900 per trip, so I can’t be a loser. Each passenger has to pay CFA 400 which will give me CFA 1200 per trip,” he explained.
Meanwhile, passengers from Bonaberi now pay CFA 300 instead of CFA 250 to arrive at Rond Point. Madam Mercy Ngombeleck was embarrassed when she arrived at “Rail Bonaberi” only to realize that the taxi fare to Rond Point has increased. She told reporters that she was forced to go back home and look for more money for her transportation.
The situation is getting worse as the days go by. It is high time the authorities that be stepped in to save the population.
