Churches face financial hardship as offerings drop.
The coming of the deadly corona virus christened COVID-19 and the measures taken by government and other institutions to curb or limit the spread of the pandemic are bringing untold hardship to some organizations. One of such institutions that I hardest hit is the church.
Alms have dropped considerably as the number of Christians permitted to attend church services has drastically reduced either due to control measures instituted by church authorities or personal decisions by individual Christians to stay at home. Many parishes in the Kumbo Diocese risk collapsing as they are unable to sustain their priests as a consequence.
It is now no secret that Holy Masses have been suspended till further notice. This implies no alms and consequently no income for the parishes. Some priests have been heard to express their disgust with the corona virus that has greatly affected their spiritual and pastoral activities. According to directives from the diocesan bishop of Kumbo, Mgr. George Nkuo, all public Masses in all the parishes in the Diocese of Kumbo are suspended. “However, the parish priests must celebrate Holy Mass every day for the faithful and at a time when the Christians know and can follow spiritually at home”, states the Bishop’s directives.
Suffice to note here that the Chrism mass, an annual occasion that brings together all the priests and lay faithful to celebrate with their bishop as well enable the Christians to contribute materially and financially to support the bishop in his pastoral ministry was suspended as a result of the COVID-19 threats. This is unbelievable, some fervent Roman Catholic Faithful have exclaimed.
