Equatorial Guinea lays border-wall foundation on Cameroon soil.
Authorities of Cameroon Ministries of Defense, (MINDEF) and Territorial Administration, ( MINAT) went on a feasibility study of the Cameroon border with Equatorial Guinea, after it came to their notice that the neighboring, friendly country had laid a border wall foundation on the Cameroon soil.
Under the instructions of President Paul Biya, the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji ,and the Minister of Defence, Joseph Beti Assomo, were on ground to take the necessary evaluation and sort a way out of the bellicose act of the bordering country.
Despite the well defined documentation showing the border limits between the two countries, Malabo has been on a cutthroat infiltration into the Cameroonian territory lately. Cameroonian authorities have always ignored this act in the name of fraternity they share with Equatorial Guinea.
The Equatorial Guinea government in 2019 had resolved to construct this border wall separating its territory from that of Cameroon. According to sources in the Cameron Army, the Equatorial Guinea soldiers had crossed River Ntem, a natural demarcation between the two countries, and had erected milestones in Kye-Ossi on the Cameroon side.
After the closure of its borders as a measure to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Cameroon government has noticed that the foundation of this wall has been laid on the Cameroon soil without any consultations.
According to the government officials, they had preferred to apply the diplomacy of proximity rather than dig deep into the official document that defines their territory. Despite this wish to maintain their fraternity, border issues between Cameroon and the Equatorial Guinea are a recurring problem that Cameroon Government has always taken lightly.
It should be noted that the Equatorial Guinea Foreign Minister, Simeon Oyono Esono Angue, met with Cameroon Prime Minister on a visit to Cameroon, August 2019 and debunked allegations of the border wall construction.
He said,``The wall does not exist. The people talking about the wall lack information. When there is a problem between two countries, it is necessary to solve the problem through peaceful and diplomatic means. The media is free to propagate information, but I insist that there is no wall.``
However, reports show that Malabo is set on building this border wall for security purpose as they accuse Cameroon of illegally letting West Africans cross to their country.
Meantime, Cameroon Government has reinforced their border security and surveillance to keep an eye on any further move by the Guineans.
