Yaounde-Douala Expressway: Phase one is 84% complete.
Work on the first 80 kilometres that constitute the first phase of the Yaounde-Douala expressway is reported to be at 84 per cent complete. According to details given by the project engineers on Friday, April 17, 2020, the first 60 kilometres of the road have been completed. It was on an inspection mission that comprised the Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, and the Governor of the Centre Region, Naseri Paul Bea, that the evaluation was done. The visiting delegation also used the trip to size up, how effective the 13-point anti Covid-19 measures are applied at the site. The Head of the project explained that each worker has been provided with a face mask and is consequently required to wear it while on site. He added that alcohol based hand sanitizers have also been made available for disinfection. The Minister and his team observed with satisfaction that the measures to combat the pandemic are applied to the letter. The team expressed satisfaction after visiting several sites of the project. The heavy deployment of machinery and the enthusiasm of project workers communicate the value given the road.It is expected to be the first expressway in the country, linking two major cities; the political capital and the economic capital. At completion, the road will deepen Sub Regional integration as it will increase access to Chad and the Central African Republic. However, statistics of the overall progress of the work don’t look very good. Deforestation stands at 65 per cent, stripping is at 77 per cent while accessing the road stretch has been taken to 100 per cent. Meanwhile 61 per cent of shrubs have been cut. 40 kilometres of the sub-base layers and the base layers have been done. At this pace, the executing firm says they shall deliver the first 80 kilometres of the express way by December 31, 2020.
67.83 per cent of funds allocated for this phase, representing over FCFA 181 billion has been used up. The funding agreement requires the entire project to be delivered by December 2021, when funding is expected to wrap up. As it stands, the government has a payable account of FCFA four billion.
