Yabassi mayor wages war against corona virus.
Hardly has he had time to settle in office than he has faced the challenge of eradicating the corona virus. The newly elected Mayor of Yabassi Council, Eba Jean Mirabeau, has taken up this challenge with zeal and dexterity.
For the past three weeks, the mayor has been going round villages in his municipality to sensitise the population and also offer anti-corona virus equipment such as 80-litre buckets with taps, nose masks, hand sanitizers and soap. The campaign began in Yabassi itself with the mayor going round all the quarters and placing hand-washing buckets around strategic junctions in the town. He is supported in this fight by the Sub divisional Officer who has issued an order prohibiting people from sitting and drinking in bars besides the normal confinement imposed by government after 6PM which is respected to the letter in Yabassi.
On Friday, March 18th, the campaign trail took the mayor to the “Valley villages” which are settlements along the banks of the Nkam River, precisely to Bonanyamsi, Bodiman, Bonjo, Wouri Bossoua and Siga Bonjo. On each lap the mayor carried out the same ritual, sensitization ending up with the distribution of buckets, nose masks, hand sanitizers and soap. It was surprising to find out that in some villages, people were not aware of the pandemic while others had partial or erroneous notions about the virus. Whereas they stand exposed to contamination as the mainstay of the people is agriculture and they sell their products in Douala passing through the River Nkam.
“Yabassi has not got a great capacity in case of a major outbreak, in terms of health facilities”, said the Mayor. “That is why the battle must be won through sensitization, leading people to change of habit and avoid risky behavior while respecting the measures spelled out by government and the WHO,” he added. He said he will continue with the sensitization effort as long as corona virus exists in Cameroon. At Siga Bonjo, there was the surprise visit to the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, who was largely in support of the initiative.
