Government drags Councils into fight against Coronavirus.
Councils and City Councils shall henceforth play a key role in the fight against the ravaging Coronavirus pandemic as government doubles efforts to combat the virus, which has now spread to eight (8) out of the ten (10) regions of the country.
The information was made public in Yaounde last Monday in a joint press release signed by the ministers of Public Health and of Decentralization and Local Development after a consultation meeting held at the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre.
Among other things, Councils and City Councils shall, within the ambit of competences conferred on them through the process of decentralization, be responsible for managing infected cases identified in their communities and shall allocate and equip infrastructure for the confinement of persons tested positive.
The decentralized territorial collectivities shall henceforth be expected to identify sites in cemeteries where persons who die of Coronavirus shall be buried. Large-scale disinfecting of the cities and mobilization of local health personnel to raise awareness on the disease will also fall within their competences.
In order to enable the Councils fully assume these new responsibilities, the government has pledged financial assistance in the days ahead, especially to Councils with less financial resources.
