Enthusiastic welcome for start of dialogue on Anglophone crisis!
A flurry of enthusiasm has enveloped even the most skeptical personalities following news that the Swiss government has offered to mediate in the three-year-long Anglophone crisis.
Even though radicals within the Anglophone separatist groups distanced themselves from the move which they considered a trap set for the people of the North West and South West regions, it is the Ambazonian Liberation movements invited for the negotiations that sent out the most sanguine of signals.
In a press statement issued on 27 June, they wrote:
“We are satisfied Switzerland has no hidden agenda, including no so-called ‘chocolate deals’, no commitment to deliver results to the Republic of Cameroon and no intention to use this process to enhance either its already stellar reputation and/or economic interests. On the contrary, Switzerland has peace, neutrality and commitment to humanitarian assistance in its DNA and we are thankful that Switzerland brings those core values to the mediation process”. Meanwhile, UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, has the following statement issued by his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric de la Rivière:
“The Secretary-General welcomes the announcement made by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs on 27 June on its efforts to facilitate a resolution of the crisis in the north-west and south-west regions of Cameroon through a dialogue process. He expresses the full backing of the United Nations to this endeavour and reaffirms his readiness to support it as necessary. He encourages all parties to participate in this process and commends the Cameroonian authorities and other stakeholders for this positive step.
The Secretary-General reiterates the need for all Cameroonian stakeholders to engage in an inclusive and genuine political dialogue to address the challenges facing the country.”
For his part, The United State’s Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Tibor Nagy, also threw his weight behind Switzerland who have engaged a process to open dialogue between the government of Cameroon and separatists in order to seek a solution to the crisis in the North West and South West regions.
“I am delighted to know the Swiss are facilitating dialogue. We encourage all parties to participate in this inclusive negotiation process to bring peace to #Cameroon”, he quipped.
