Cameroon-Nigeria interconnection electricity project: Tenders launched for Nachtigal-Bafoussam phase.
Hopes to construct a 420 Mega Watts interconnection electricity grid between Cameroon and Nigeria have been heightened, following the publication of a tender notice for the first phase of the project. The power is expected to be generated from the Nachtigal Hydroelectric Power Plant near Yaounde.
The tender is seeking to identify prequalified technical engineering firms that will act as project managers for the construction of 400 KV transmission line from Nachtigal to Bafoussam, before eventually extending it to the Nigerian border.
In the order notice issued by Minister Gaston Eloundou Essomba of Water and Energy, the project will consist of a 400 KV line between Nachtigal-Bafoussam, a 400/225/20/15 KV transformer substation, the extension of the Nachtigal-Bafoussam substations, the construction of 90 KV lines between Nachtigal-Bafia, Bafoussam-Banganté, Bafoussam-Foumbam and Bachtigal-Nkometou and the construction of 90, 30, 15KV substations in Bafia, Bagangte and Foumban.
Minister Gaston Eloudou Essomba hinted that a memorandum has been signed with Kalpataru Power Transmission Ltd, to proceed with the technical studies and the eventual construction when the time comes. A preliminary design has already been received from Kalpataru Power Transmission Ltd, while studies on the environmental and social impact have been launched.
The tender is due for May 18 and the selected firm will have an arduous task of evaluating the work already done. The Water and Energy Minister, in the communiqué, said firms with an international reputation will be given priority.
The Nachtigal Hydroelectric Power Plant is expected to produce some 2, 900 Giga Watts yearly. The FCFA 786 billion pumped into the project has been raised by Cameroon and its development partners like Electricité de France and others.
The water and energy boss said they were getting everything set to assure that when the project begins, it will record a smooth ride.
When complete, the interconnection electricity grid will be a perfect example of a regional integration project as it will link up, not only Cameroon and Nigeria but the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa, CEMAC and the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.
