Health personnel demand Kamto’s COVID-19 donation.

Health personnel demand Kamto’s COVID-19 donation.

While government at the instigation of MINAT boss, Paul Atanga Nji, is rejecting a donation by Maurice Kamto, leader of MRC, to help in the anti-COVID fight, health personnel are demanding its acceptance to facilitate their job.

Sylvain NGA ONANA, President of the health personnel syndicate (syndicat des personnels et établissement de santé), told RFI yesterday that government’s decision to turn down the MRC’s donation was regrettable at the time they needed the health equipment most.

Kamto’s gesture consisted of 10 000 barrier masks, 6 800 surgical masks , 950 Covid-19 detection tests and a thermo-flash.

When Kamto’s men turned up with the donation, the minister of public health, Manaouda Malachie, refused to receive the gift, but referred them to MINAT boss, Paul Atanga Nji who has ordered MRC’s anti-COVID-19 initiative, “Survie Cameroon Survival Initiative" (SCSI), to be banned and its accounts frozen.

Nga Onana said they needed all the equipment proposed by Kamto not only to protect themselves but to better treat those infected by COVID-19.

He said he was working in a hospital where they were provided only one mask a day when they required three. The health institution, he said had no thermoflash.

He expressed regret that a donation from somebody of good faith should be rejected for political reasons. “Does this illness have a political colour?” he queried.
