400 Bamenda bike-riders undertake ‘stage-managed’ protest on Labour Day

Over 400 bike-riders in Bamenda staged a peaceful demonstration on the Bamenda Commercial on Labour day May 1, 2020 against police harassment. Most of them had their bikes seized by forces of law and order for failing to procure identification documents demanded by the state.
The seizure was equally motivated by the increasing rate of kidnappings, theft and harassment by men on motorbikes.

In a recent security meeting in Bamenda in March, the minister of territorial administration, Paul Atanga Nji, instructed that all commercial bikes should be painted yellow and bikers should have a jacket, insurance and driver's licence.
Talking to the press President Nsoh Handsome was categorical about their plight.
"We are all humans, we need to feed our families, we are tired of kidnapping and killing perpetrated by people claiming to be bike riders", he said.
“We have pledged to respect the institutions of the republic but in turn to be respected.”
Nsoh sent a strong message to the defence and security forces to stop harassing them while they ply their trade in peace.
"We will procure all the documents demanded but let our bikes be given so we can work and pay"
Meanwhile, the City mayor Paul Achombang; Mbigha Njah Felix, Mayor of Bamenda I; and Chenwi Peter, the Mayor Bamenda II, pleaded with them to calm down their temper. They reassured the bike riders that their bikes would be handed back to them only if they respect instructions from their authorities.
The City Mayor promised to channel their worries to the SDO for Mezam.
Many were also surprised that the bikers kept demonstrating without any confrontation from gun-toting soldiers stationed at ever corner of the City. The generation consensus among Bamenda residents was that the demonstration was government- managed. The suspicion grew stronger when the City Mayor was spotted among the bikers.
