Justine Diffo gets reward for activism: appointed PCA of ART.
Dr Justine Diffo Tchuinkam of More Women in Politics fame has been appointed board chair of the Telecommunications Regulatory Board (ART). She was appointed last Thursday by presidential decree.
The appointment is seen as reward for her gender balance activism. She has for the last decade led a campaign for balanced representation of the womenfolk in state institutions. The results are so tangible in parliament with 61 women sitting in the current legislature out of the 180-member legislature and over 20 female senators.
Her NGO, more Women in Politics, has done a lot of lobbying within state institutions, leading to the respect of international norms in the eligibility of women, considered as better managers, in state institutions. Her coaching lessons to Cameroonian women to join politics have also increased female enthusiasm in political issues.
Dr. Diffo’s critics, however, see her as an ambitious woman intent on filling the political space left by Prof. Maurice Kamto by not participating in the last twin polls. Like Kamto, she hails from Upper Plateau Division in the West region with Baham as headquarters. She is currently alternate Senator from that Division with the Chief of Baham as substantive candidate.
The law lecturer at Yaounde II is also technical adviser at the Ministry of Communication.
In yet another politically motivated appointment, former UPC MP and Secretary General of one of the factions, Hon. Bapooh Lipot, was also appointed Board Member of the SRC (Société de Recouvrement des Créances du Cameroun) by another presidential decree.
The appointment is seen as a face saver and reward for his UPC faction throwing its weight behind the candidacy of President Paul Biya at the 7 October 2018 presidential elections. The UPC lost all its seats and councils in the last twin polls following the emergence of Cabral Libii’s PCRN. Like Cabral, he hails from the Nyong and Kelle which traditionally supported the UPC but endorsed the PCRN after most UPC lists were rejected.
