Administrative officials of the North West region have expressed appreciation to President Paul Biya as they received anti COVID-19 kits.
The gifts were received at the esplanade of the North West Governor’s Office in Bamenda by the Secretary Genera,l Viang Mekala.
Four trucks touched the Bamenda 1 Upstation esplanade of the North West Governors office bearing 1870 cartons of savon, 1020 cartons of hand sanitizers, 6800 buckets and 34000 face masks targeted towards the 34 sub divisions that make up the region.
The gifts which were received on April 30 2020 by Mr Viang Mekala ,in collaboration with the S.D.O for Mezam, Simon Emile Mooh, and other top regional security officials are coming at a time when the region has recorded 5 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with calls to many who may have come in contact with infected patients to turn up for screening at the lone regional hospital centre.
Speaking at the ceremony, Viang Mekala appreciated for the august gesture as he noted: "We are convinced these gifts will aid the population fight the Covid- 19. We shall proceed to distribute to the various sub-divisions so that collectively we can curb the existence of the epidemic".
He however hinted the population had for a long time thrown their weight behind the administration in the global fight but fell short of funds to purchase these preventive kits.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Tchuente Gilbert, sub-director at MINAT in charge of humanitarian affairs, added: "The gifts will help the region better combat the Covid-19 pandemic at a delicate moment such as this".
At press time, the modalities of distribution remained unclear and the essence doubtful, owing to insecurity which continued to reign with most sub-divisions inaccessible as Divisional offices and other administrative structures are completely out of use.
