COVID-19 barrier measures: Drivers respect rules for fear of punishment.
“I have a car of fourteen places and on each side of the car, three people should be seated instead of four and five depending on the size of the chairs,” said Thierry with a disappointing tone. “I have never seen it before. That is extraordinary for me and for all the divers. Carry one person in front and two behind is a total loss for us”, replied Pascal, a taxi driver who has been working for more than 15 years. “To have five thousand francs for a day is more painful at this time when things become harder”, said Idris, a bike rider. The drivers, who have been in the job for long explained their sadness since the beginning of the pandemic. But knowing the situation and the danger of the disease for them who are exposed more than who are in-doors, they also took measures to fight against the pandemic.
Thierry, the “opep” driver respects the measures of social distancing from morning to evening. “I am not like the others who play with the rules”. They carry more people than what is ordered in the morning and start respecting the norms prescribed by the authorities during the day because they have seen security forces around. Apart from it, Thierry has his mask and sometimes his gloves when he is called to carry things behind the car to help the passengers. For Pascal, family head and an old man in the job, those measures prescribed by the World Health Organisation and the Public Health are just there to confirm what he always said to his family and colleagues who move around, touch anything and come and greet people or eat with them. “I am always scared about diseases linked to microbes because I find it more dangerous for the body. Every time that I have the possibility, I wash my hands and when it is not possible, I make sure to have my hand sanitizer even if sometimes I forget to use it during the day”.
Concerning the mask, I wear it the whole day.
For the bike rider, his only preoccupation is to have what he will put in his pockets. He does not know the danger of the disease. “I don’t know what happens; I wear masks because they asked us to wear it,” he added.
“I am not really sure that it kills people”.
In all the cases, the drivers respect the ruler consciously and apply them with a great responsibility even though some are not conscious but apply for fear of punishment.
