Short-term palliatives under review.
The Prime Minister, Dr Joseph Dion Ngute, has assured leaders of transporters, restaurant and hotel trade unions in Cameroon that the government is considering a series of measures to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on businesses in the country.
He made the disclosure in Yaounde on Tuesday, April 28, 2020, during two separate consultations with transporters’ trade unions and representative of the hotel and restaurant sectors in Cameroon.
“The President of the Republic has instructed me to meet with you to discuss the steps that the government needs to take to support the sectors that you represent and which are struggling to cope with the pandemic that is not sparing our country at this time,,” Dr Joseph Dion Ngute said.
The concerns raised by leaders of the transporters’ trade unions included the re-introduction of some of the passengers’ spaces suppressed as a result of government restrictive measures, the distribution of sanitary materials to help protect transporters and passengers and a stop to the harassment of drivers perpetrated by law enforcement officers.
For their part, trade unionists of the hotel and restaurant sectors pleaded for tax incentives and lighter procedures in staff management to get their businesses back on the rails.
After having listened to these complaints, the Prime Minister acknowledged that this situation is not specific to Cameroon; which is why he said the government is counting on their understanding and solidarity towards withstanding measures put in place by the government to slow the spread of the pandemic.
He went further to reassure them that their demands shall be considered when future measures to support the business sector are decided.
«We have proposals to present to the President of the Republic. These will go beyond your expectations and even your sectors.”
Tuesday’s consultation that come after last Saturday’s meeting between transporters’ trade unions and the Minister, Secretary General of the Prime Minister’s Office, were requested by the President of the Republic. The Prime Minister was due to meet representatives of Cameroon Employers’ Union GICAM on April29, 2020 to chart ways of cushioning the shocks of the corona virus pandemic on the Cameroonian economy. The barrier measures put in place by the government to contain the spread of COVID-19 have had serious consequence on the business sectors in Cameroon, notably hotels, restaurants and travel agencies.
