Tough time for SCNC activists

The low turnout for the 9 February 2020 twin legislative and municipal elections in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon was undoubtedly due to the lockdown imposed on that part of the country by anti-regime activists. “Ambazonians”, as the latter call themselves, had long warned that they would do everything to prevent the holding of the said elections in the two Anglophone regions. And so, while Cameroonians came out en masse to vote freely in the other eight regions of the county, polling stations were scanty in the North West and South West regions.

The Horizon has been informed that with the help of some die-hard supporters of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) party, the forces of law and order have been fine-tuning strategies to fish out the architects of the lockdown, especially in the North West region, considered more hostile to the Biya regime.

We have also learned on good authority that many of those who planned the boycott of the twin elections are linked to the separatist Southern Cameroons National Council (SCNC). Our informants who asked not to be named identified them as militants who had earlier been involved in non-conformist activities such as the sale of SCNC membership cards and other gadgets, the organisation of secret SCNC meetings, the distribution of incendiary SCNC literature, amongst others. Some of the names brought to our newsroom of such people are Mborang Chrysanthus, Anye Alice, Mbianda Stephanie Lenkoh, Amanda Taku, Penn Tabot Yusifu, Emmanuel Sacho, Tosah Achile Kanjam and Ngu Doris. The Horizon was informed that as at the time of going to press, none of them had been apprehended by the security forces.

“This is because some of them have travelled out of the county while others are in hiding,” one of the informants explained. “Those in hiding are either in some remote villages or in the forests bordering Nigeria. But whether they are abroad or in distant villages, their influence is still felt in most areas of Southern Cameroons. For quite some time now, they have been funding activities here through their proxies and carrying out a lot of underground work to push forward their separatist agenda.”

This newspaper was also informed that the raid on 14 February 2020 of Ngarbuh village in Donga Mantung division of the North West region, organised by military and defense forces, which led to the death of over thirty-five people including children and pregnant women, was connected to the search for SCNC militants and other “Ambazonians.”
