Fighting Covid-19 in drinking spots: Bars to reduce seats by half.
In a note issued by the National Coordinator of the Syndicate of Drinking Spots in Cameroon, Valery Ntendie, all bars, cabarets and night clubs are called to comply with the directive of reducing the sitting capacity in bars by half or face consequences. Other measures outlined by the body include the installation of hand washing facility, the compulsory putting on of hand gloves by staff, increased ventilation and the strict respect of measures laid down by government.
The bar owners are responding to a wave of criticisms by some observers that the steps taken by the government to ease the impact of the anti Covid-19 measures on the sector, have been abused.
A manager of a drinking spot regretted that some people fail to recognize their drinking capacity and end up behaving irresponsibly when they get drunk. She said the move to re-open bars after 6pm is saluted, but much collaboration is required from the customers. The syndicate has planned surprise control missions to ensure that members strictly adhere to the measures. Bars are among the businesses that were highly affected by the 6pm lockdown as most operators say that is rather when their business begins. The bar owners say they want to accompany government in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
