Voluntary Action Trust joins the fight against COVID-19

Voluntary Action Trust, a humanitarian organization has joined efforts to curb the spread of the novel COVID-19 in Cameroon by taking action around some localities in Yaounde. Their programme tagged “Masks for All” which started on May 2, 2020 continued on Saturday, May 9, 2020 around the Ekounou and Mvan area in Yaounde.
Their programme however is not only aimed at distributing face masks to the local population but also aimed at sensitizing the local population on preventive measures that can stop the spread of the virus among the citizens.
“We may distribute only the ten thousand masks that we have due to the limited means. Today at Ekounou you can see people washing their hands, we are sensitizing them and hopefully by the end of the day we must have touched many people who can take preventive measures”, said Cho Sallah Pius, the President of Voluntary Action Trust.
To Cho Sallah Pius, the government’s decision to reopen bars at late nights might increase the spread of the virus especially as many Cameroonians now believe the virus has been defeated. In his opinion it is still important for the government to impose physical distancing and limit late hours in drinking spots.
“With the last measures that the government took asking people to close bars and night clubs at late hours, most people think that it is the end of the coronavirus, so most people are no longer wearing masks,” he added.
As the Voluntary Action Trust pushes forward its initiative, the demand for face masks and sanitizers became more than supply as those who came for their free masks were more than the available masks produced as well as sanitizers.
Nfor Marcel is the Secretary General of the Voluntary Action Trust. “The major concern has been struggling to maintain order and scrambling for the mask since each and everyone is obliged to protect themselves from this pandemic”, he said. As they are confronted with limited supply, those who arrive where they are showing gestures first always benefit from the donation and those who come late only get to benefit from the sensitization which is general.
It is important to mention that the number of infected persons in the COVID-19 pandemic is still breaking the scare with figures above 4million and death toll above two hundred. The case in Cameroon here recording about 2200 infected persons and more than 100 deaths recorded.
