UNDP offers material to prisons.
The United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, Cameroon has handed some hygiene and sanitation material to the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms as a preventive response strategy to limiting the propagation of the coronavirus in some prisons in the country.
They were handed by the Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP, Alassane Ba with the Vice Chairperson of the Commission, Prof. James Mouangue Kobila, receiving the material in a ceremony on May 14, 2020. Some prisons in five regions will benefit from the offer and they include the prisons of Yaounde, Douala, Bamenda, Buea, Mbalmayo and Maroua.
Handing the gifts, Alassane Ba said the gesture which is the outcome of the partnership between UNDP, the Human Rights Commission, the Ministry of Justice and the National Youth Council, falls within the framework of preventing the spread of the virus in the country with particular attention to prisons. He noted that the materials amongst others comprise 18,800 face masks, 275 mobile washing points, 9,400 detergents of 1kg each, 315 cartons of savon, 3,500 hand gloves, 9,400 hydro alcoholic sanitizers and thermo flashes.
The UNDP Deputy Resident Representative equally lauded the April 15, 2020 decision by the President of the Republic relating to the commutation and remittance of prison sentences.
For his part, the Vice Chairperson of the Commission, Prof James Mouangue Kobila, while expressing gratitude for the gifts said they will be used for the disinfection of detention centres and the maintenance of sanitary conditions. He cited the Africa Charter on Human and People’s Rights which highlights the protection of the health of citizens irrespective of their location, reason why the gesture will go a long way to protecting the health conditions of detainees. “The situation of prisons is preoccupying to all and we should fight this pandemic leaving no one behind. The health of citizens is the primordial concern of States with Cameroon not being different”, he stated. Those of the regions are expected to be distributed in the next ten days.
According to Prof. James Mouangue, UNDP and the Commission have always been partners with the UN agency helping the Commission in 2007 with 3, 000 US dollars within the context of improving the capacity of human rights workers. The money was used for six years (2008-2014) for the elaboration of several activities.
