Resumption of classes: Preparations for June 1 tentative date.
The Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Joseph Dion Ngute, on May 14, 2020 through videoconferencing chaired the weekly Interministerial meeting devoted to the evaluation of the Response Strategy against the COVID-19 Pandemic in Cameroon with focus on the resumption of classes in all levels of education on the tentative date of June 1, 2020.
In his opening statement, the Prime Minister said the resumption of classes suspended following the instruction of the President of the Republic, Paul Biya on March 17, 2020, will depend on the situation of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.
He disclosed that the Head of State has approved the adjustments made in the 2019/2020 academic calendar. Following the new calendar, depending on the situation of the pandemic, examinations will be written between July and August 2020 and holidays at the end of August. With regards to the opening of schools for the 2020/2021 academic year, the calendar indicates that Basic and Secondary Education would be on October 5, 2020, while higher education and universities on October 15, 2020.
Specifically on the resumption of classes, the Prime Minister insisted on measures to respect social distancing and barrier actions instructed by the Head of State. For these measures to be respected, the Prime Minister told education sector ministers to identify classes that could reopen on June 1, 2020. He also gave special instructions with regard to barrier measures in nursery schools. After the opening statement, Prime Minister Dion Ngute gave the floor to the various ministers of the education sector to present measures they were taking to ensure the resumption of classes and the respect of the adjusted calendar of the next academic year.
It emerged from the presentations that with the Basic Education only the examination classes will resume schooling on the tentative date, same with Secondary Education. Students will be shared out in classes with not more than 50 per class. He also gave the floor to the Minister of Public Health to present the situation of the coronavirus pandemic in Cameroon as well as a report on the material and financial contributions to the National Solidarity Fund put in place by the Head of State within the framework of the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. The Minister reportedly said over FCFA 3.5 billion has been collected. As for the situation of the pandemic, he disclosed that there were 1, 687 people who have recovered, 2, 910 positive cases and 139 deaths.
