Sustainable regional development: Government, experts fine-tune master plan.
As part of the development of the Master Plan for Planning and Sustainable Regional Development (SNADDT), government officials and experts have held a national workshop to brainstorm on strategic objectives and put in place a five-year action plan. The workshop was opened on Tuesday June 25 by the Secretary General of the Ministry of the Economy, Planning and Regional development, Jean Tchoffo.
The Master Plan is Stage 2 of Phase 3, the near-final outcome, and the remaining Phase 4- Formalisation of the SNADDT – will lead to the restitution and validation of the work document during another national workshop. Financed by the government, the SNADDT is being technically developed by two consulting firms: Studi International and Beta Consult.
Speaking at the workshop, Jean Tchoffo said government is poised to correct natural resource inequality and disequilibrium across the national territory while protecting the environment. This, he said, is in furtherance of government’s long-term objective of reducing poverty to socially-acceptable level, become a middle-income country, attain the status of a newly-industrialized country and reinforce national unity and consolidate the democratic process by 2035. “Amongst other things, we shall reorganize production basins and make them more dynamic,” he underscored.
Remili Boujemar, a consultant with Studi International, said the Master Plan incorporates a public-private partnership approach and will largely involve local populations. “It is a very strategic study. This is the best way to plan for the rural, semi-urban and urban areas of Cameroon and how resources can be sustainably distributed and managed for the development of the whole country in the long-term. By 2035, Cameroon will become the territory people will like – with an integrated development,” the expert noted.
