Murder of Mamfe mayor: Manyu people condemn barbaric act.

The People of Manyu Division of the South West Region, under the leadership of Minister Victor Arrey Mengot and Senator Nfor Tabetando, have vehemently condemned the gruesome murder of the Mayor of Mamfe Central, Ashu Priestly Ojong, allegedly by Ambaboys, on May 10, 2020, while on a peace-building mission to Eshobi village.

The condemnation was made known during an enlarged meeting, convened by the Senior Divisional officer for Manyu, Oum II Joseph, which brought together close to 5000 Manyu Women, Men and Youths on Saturday May 17, 2020.

The SDO in strong terms condemned the barbaric killing of the Mayor of Mamfe by separatist fighters whom he said have crossed the red line. He opined that those who are sponsoring these killings in Manyu from the Diaspora would be fished out because they have already been known. He then urged the Manyu people to stand up as one, collaborate with the State to put an end to such brutal killings in the Division. He said the Manyu people are all accountable for the atrocities committed in the area. So they should jointly say enough is enough. Taking the rostrum, Minister Victor Arrey Mengot started by expressing gratitude to the Manyu S.D.O for convening the meeting and thanked the population of Manyu for their massive turnout to discuss issues affecting them. He wondered why the murder of Mayor Ashu Priestly Ojong, a young man he described as dynamic and promising business magnate. Minister Mengot recounted a series of meeting that have been held since the beginning of the crisis in a bid to put an end to it or to plead with the misguided youths to lay down their arms and come out from the bushes. He narrated that after the national dialogue they came back home, sensitized the people on the resolutions that were taken.

The member of government said now the Head of State has given the two Anglophone Regions a Special Status to manage their own affairs. “There are plans underway to reconstruct the damaged villages of the two Regions, as FCFA39 billion has been set aside to start the reconstruction. An Autonomous Limbe Deep Sea Port has been created by a Presidential Decree. What do our children want?” He questioned.

Minister Mengot regretted what is happening in Manyu and said he blamed nobody but that they all join heads together to find out how they got to where they are today. He denounced and condemned the activities of all secessionist groups in Manyu Division and their sponsors in Cameroon and abroad who are responsible for this act as well as the killings over the last three years, as well as the destruction of public and private properties.

Mengot equally said enough is enough. The Chiefs were also lauded for coming out for the first time with a strongly worded document to say enough is enough to the gruesome killings.

Senator NforTabetando, for his part, said they the Chiefs should go by tradition to follow up these killers because a Manyu man has never believed in blood shedding. He called on all and sundry to advise the children in the bushes to lay down their arms, because peace must return to Manyu Division.

Ayuk John Takunchong, former mayor, said Cameroon remains one and indivisible and that the culprits must be fished out because all the villagers know them better. He said they eat and wine together and some of them are their sponsors.

The meeting was characterized by speeches as all castigated the gruesome murder of the Mamfe Mayor at his tender age.
