Junior Parliamentarians have converged in Yaounde under the banner of the 21st session of the children’s parliament in Cameroon to brainstorm on issues affecting the rights and welfare of the child.
The ceremony that held Wednesday June 26 at the National Assembly was aimed at mobilising the national community on issues regarding birth registration and the protection of children against the proliferation of narcotics in the school milieu.
Presided at by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, this year’s session was observed under the theme, “ Ensure that every child has a birth certificate, protect children against drug abuse as well as the proliferation of narcotics in the school milieu: the need for an urgent synergic action.”
The government shall through this theme, sensitise youths on the importance of birth certificate to every individual alive, determine the role of youths in the fight against social ills and equally increase awareness as concerns the physical as well as the mental effects and consequences of narcotics on the health of the child.
In her speech, the minister of social affairs, MINAS, Pauline Irene Nguene, said this session is an opportunity for the government to educate and prepare the youths to assume their future responsibilities. “These children are models today because they have been selected, we expect them to promote the values of integrity and the rights of the child and also show a good example to their community, the society and their families,” she said.
According to figures published by the ministry of public health, 60% of young persons between the ages of 20 and 25 have already consumed drugs at least once, with the most popular being tobacco, cannabis, tramadol. More so the birth registration rate of children in Cameroon less than 5 years old was estimated at 66.1% in 2014, while more than 1.3 million children less than 5 years were estimated not to be registered in 2017. The lowest rates are in the Far North 42%, North 61%, Southwest 56%, and East region 58%.
Going by the resolutions arrived at during the close of the plenary session at the hemicycle, the junior parliamentarians pledged to reinforce sensitisation strategies of the youth towards the responsible use of social media and the enforcement of restriction measures. They will equally ensure the organisation of national, regional and local campaigns on the prevention and fight against drug abuse among the youths, as well as the psychological follow up and the reinsertion of children suspected to be associated with armed groups.
“We engage to promote the rights of the child in the school milieu as well as in the society and to be architects of peace in our respective communities,” the junior MPs affirmed.
