Government’s car allowance: ‘Rebel’ female MP dedicates own share of to COVID-19 fight!
In a rare show of commitment for the common good, one of Cameroon’s youngest Members of Parliament has decided to break with tradition by using his car allowance for something else.
Hon. Nourane Fotsing who belongs to Cabral Libii’s PCRN took many by surprise when he announced she’d not be getting a car for herself, but dedicate her share of the allowance, evaluated at over 25 million FCFA, to the COVID-19 fight.
“At this moment when our country crosses the bar of 5,000 cases of Covid-19 and about 171 deaths, permit me announce my intensification of the Solidarite_Covid-19_237 initiative in the national territory,” she said.
The MP added: “… the vehicle endowment that I will receive will be redirected to this initiative in order to bring more comfort to the population, victims of this ruthless pandemic”.
With two cars, she said, adding another would be useless for her. The 32-year old politician’s move has been lauded by many who say it is a demonstration of her dedication to those that voted her into office.
Cameroon’s Ministry of Finance recently said it was disbursing over 4 billion FCFA for the purchase of cars for newly elected MPs.
The decision was received with mixed feelings as some said there are other issues plaguing the country that should be a priority including the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hon. Nourane Fotsing, it should be noted, has since developed a reputation for breaking with tradition, earning her the designation of ‘rebel’. She is said to have refused to shake hands with House Speaker, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, when the latter ,just back from treatment in France which was in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, joined other elected MPs for the validation of their mandates. The ‘rebel” MP thought Cavaye ought to have been put under quarantine for 14 days like other Cameroonians who had travelled abroad during the outbreak of the pandemic so as not to contaminate others.
