Artist Charlotte Dipanda calls on Biya to hand over power “without resentment”
The succession of President Paul Biya has been very much in debate by Cameroonians on the social media in Cameroon.
Cameroon’s renowned music artist, Charlotte Dipanda , has joined her voice in that debate.
The artist who has never been seen engaging in politics took everyone by surprise during an interview with VOA – Africa saying: “I think it is time for us to be offered something else, it is time for Cameroon to develop because when there is no alternation there is not really any development possible”.
To Charlotte Dipanda, President Biya “has come to the end of what he could offer and … he would gain from giving way to a new governance without resentment …”
The head of state and his ruling CPDM have, however, not commented on the topic.
But some bloggers said to be sponsored by the regime took to social media, linking Dipanda to Kamto’s MRC. One of them questioned why the artist who does not live in Cameroon should express a political opinion on issues concerning the country.
During his last appearance in May 19th, Biya asked Cameroonians to remain cautious and not be susceptible to rumours on social media.
The 87-year- old politician has been president since 1982.
