During a working visit by the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Public Health in charge of Epidemics and Pandemics, Alim Hayatou, to the South West Region, South West Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai revealed that his region has so far registered 31 cases of the deadly Coronavirus. He gave the breakdown of the figures as follows; 21 positive cases in Limbe, eight in Buea and two in Kumba respectively.
In response, Alim Hayatou called on the population of the South West Region to be vigilant and scrupulously respect all measures put in place by government in an effort to contain the pandemic in the Region.
The Secretary of State, accompanied by a team of advisers and medical experts from the Ministry of Public Health, was in Limbe on Thursday May7, 2020 for a working visit to the health facilities providing response to COVID-19 cases in the Region.
After a working session, Alim Hayatou, accompanied by his entourage and the South West Governor, visited the COVID-19 treatment and testing units at the Buea Regional Hospital, the University of Buea, the Baptist complex in Mutengene, Middle Farms-Limbe and the Regional Hospital Limbe respectively.
While presenting an overview of measures put in place to contain the spread of the pandemic, Governor Okalia Bilai announced that three deaths have so far been recorded in the Region with one recovered case.
South West Governor was keen to note that the 31 persons had come in contact with over 250 persons.
Out of the 250 cases tested, there are 44 suspected cases whose results are still awaited.
The Governor assured the Secretary of State that the Region is taking all necessary preventive measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus, as control points have been mounted even in the most remote parts of the Region notably in Akwaya, Ekok, Ekondo Titi, Idabato, Bamousso, Idenau, Tiko and Limbe respectively. He acknowledged the receipt of the presidential gifts, which he said have been distributed accordingly.
For his part, the Regional Delegate of Public Health for the South West, Dr. Zacheus Ebongo Nanje, thanked the administration for the candid collaboration received so far. He urged government to make available personal protective gears for health personnel who are exposed to untold risk of their lives on a daily basis in a bid to providing patients with the necessary care.
The Secretary of State appreciated the efforts by the South West Governor, Bernard Okalia Bilai who also doubles as President of the Regional Committee against COVID-19 set up by the Minster of Public Health. He called on the committee not to relent their efforts to contain the pandemic, while thanking the population for their sense of responsibility and urging them to remain vigilant because COVID-19 is real and deadly.
