Acquisition of Unique Identification Number: Banks sensitize clients as deadline nears.
The taxpayer number will hence be required when doing bank transactions.
Customers have been receiving text messages, reminding them to get the unique identification Number. The messages contain details on how the identification number is mandatory for all account users.
Celvina Bonghaji, worker in the private sector, said she was surprised last week when she went to her bank to do a transaction and was compelled to get her account updated with the number. For fear of losing access to her account, she patiently went through the required procedure. One of the Commercial Banks in Yaounde says customer are called to either show up at the bank to get matriculated or go online to fill the required documents. The Manager said the number will be required as from June 30, 2020. He said persons without the number will be compelled to get one before accessing their accounts or doing any transactions.
The Taxation Department made the information public in April this year, indicating that the Unique Identification Number will be required when opening a bank account, subscribing to a social insurance scheme, as well as signing up for water and electricity supply. The new measure, tax officials explained, would enable the Taxation Department to have a full knowledge of the tax paying population. At the same time, the Director General of Taxation, Modeste Mopa Fatoing, signed a communiqué, strengthening the tax identification system. The new measures have been introduced on the strength of the 2020 financial law which gives the department the leverage to take such moves.
The Unique Identification Number or Taxpayer Identification Number is a combination of digits and letters that prove the identity of a taxpayer. It is issued by the taxation department and would hence become a very useful tool in business transactions.
