Subsidised sales pull crowds in Bamenda.
Thousands turned out last Monday, April 25, to acquire basic commodities during sales organized by the Bamenda City Council.
During the sales, a kilogram of meat sold as cheap as FCFA 1000, down from the usual FCFA 2500. Five kilograms of rice, as well as six tables of savon were also auctioned at FCFA 1000. Thousands have been trooping in every Monday to take advantage of the sales as all items are sold at slightly below half of the usual price.
Last Monday, over 5000 people turned out for the sales, but the City Mayor, Paul Tambeng Achobong, regretted that they planned supplies for just 2500 persons,. The mayor explained that getting the items to meet the growing demand is not as easy. He said it’s been thanks to philanthropic gestures that they are able to organize the subsidized sales. The council mayor observed that the enticing offers pushed people to break the social distancing measures aimed at barring the way to Covid-19. Consequently the wearing of face masks and washing of hands have been made compulsory to those who wish to access the Monday subsidized sales.
Speaking after the purchase of some items at the site, Josepha Ngum said the items would serve her a great deal as she saved some FCFA 3000 from purchasing there, "I will plan to always buy my things here every week because my business has been slowed down by the two crises facing our region,” she said. Several other inhabitants seem to have found solace in the sales as they have rearranged themselves to make their purchases from the offer.
