Coronavirus: Ahead of schools resumption, Bamenda 1 Council sanitizes schools.

Following the June 1st school resumptions after three months of shutdown in a bid to manage the novel coronavirus, some education establishments in the Bamenda 1 municipality have been sanitized as part of prescriptions to ensure a COVID 19-free environment.

The initiative is the brainchild of the mayor of Bamenda 1 Mbigha Njah Felix. Government Bilingual Nursery and Primary School, Cambridge Nursery and Primary School. Holy Rosary Integrated Comprehensive Technical College Bamendakwe, CBC Primary School Mile 1 Upstation, and Micheal Angelo Bilingual Nursery and Primary School were the schools visited by the mayor of Bamenda 1 together with a sanitization team from his council’s sanitary unit.

The team whose arduous task began as early as 9 am took through the partially tarred detours to ensure students of the examination classes of both the primary, secondary and high schools make it to school as prescribed by PM Joseph Dion Ngute. At the school premises, attention was paid to the first and 2nd cycle examination classes as well as the primary 6 for the primary section.

The North West region counts over 35 infected cases with well over 15 deaths. Note should be taken here that schools resumption before the COVID19 pandemic has been subject to multiple boycotts as a result of the Anglophone crisis.

With many more frontline secondary and primary schools such as GBHS Bamendakwe, Ecole Publique des Champions, Saint Bridgette Primary School and the GS Army Camp all left out by the team ,there exist doubts as to the effectiveness of the campaign.

Most of these private schools have remained opened with hundreds of students and pupils plunging in for knowledge grasp. The Covid-19 worry therefore adds to a plethora of worries as many say they are between the hammer and the anvil. However with some schools non-functional, the Mayor thinks the dice is cast and all will be well for an effective kick-off come June 1st which coincidentally falls on another prescribed Ghost town day.

The team used 500 liters of water and detergents to disinfect administrative offices as well as classrooms comprising of benches and foot stands.

Saluting the gesture of the municipal authority, the head teacher of Holy Rosary Integrated Comprehensive Nursery and Primary School, Sister Sylvie Lum, disclosed that her institution is set for the schools resumption come June 1st 2020. She further added provision has been made for a pool for disinfection of their feet before entry into the classrooms. As she hinted, in a bid to maintain a hygienic condition, a clean-up campaign is ongoing whose aim is to help fight the virus.

The Horizon learnt that reconstruction works are going on to better the institution for studies.

For his part, the proprietor of Micheal Angelo Nursery and Primary School said the disinfection work by the Bamenda 1 Council has reduced the fear of contracting the virus which hitherto existed amongst teachers and pupils and that his institution is set to resume studies.

The mayor’s team disclosed they would delve into deeper waters to ensure the virus is kicked out of the municipality as he announced work will continue in the municipality.
