Priests reminded to desist from “cheap political activism”.

Mgr. George Nkuo, Bishop of the Diocese of Kumbo in his homily at the Kumbo Cathedral, Thursday, May 28, admonished the clergy to rekindle hope in Christ’s faithful especially during this period of numerous challenges facing humanity.

“As priests we are called upon to be ministers of hope. We must focus our activities as preachers of the word”, the Bishop said. He reminded the priests of the promises they made during their ordinations which include chastity, poverty and obedience. He called on the men of God to desist from what he described as cheap political activism.

The Bishop said each year the priests and lay faithful gather around their shepherd in joy to bless the oils used for their pastoral ministry. He, however, regretted that due to the COVID-19 scare, the ambience that usually characterizes the Chrism Mass was absent this year. He said the initial date slated for the Chrism Mass had to be changed in a bid to mitigate the effect of the coronavirus. He said even ordinations that were already programmed for Thursday, April 16, had to be suspended.

Corona scare

Mgr. George Nkuo harped on the COVID-19 and its effects. He said things this time around have been conditional by the pandemic.

“We now talk Coro, cough Coro laugh Coro, think Coro,” he said. He said Christians and humanity are at pains because of the pandemic and its scorching effect.

He said the virus is no respecter of persons regardless of our social, political, economic and racial status. The bishop, however, reminded his audience that as Christians they should look up to Jesus Christ for the long lasting solution. “The Coronavirus should make us to rethink who we are,” he said. He reiterated on the directives dished out by government and the World Health Organization, WHO, on measures to curb the spread of the disease. The Chrism Mass that was selectively attended was void of the usual ecstasy including the exclusion of group photographs on the Programme.
