Rights commission lauds government efforts to contain Covid-19.
Members of the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms have addressed a message of encouragement and appreciation to the government for its effort made so far to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. They made the statement during a meeting at the headquarters of the institution on May 27, 2020, chaired by the Vice President of the Commission, James Mouangue Kobila. While calling on Cameroonians to continue respecting the barrier measures prescribed by the government and the World Health Organization to keep COVID-19 at bay, the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms is calling on the government to extend the number of centres to take care of patients suffering from the pandemic.
The National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms also used the forum to condemn the assassination last May 10, 2020 of the Mayor of Mamfe, Prisley Ojong, by yet-to-be identified gunmen.
Meeting shortly after the passing away of the Chairman of the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms, Dr Chemuta Divine Banda, the members of the commission paid glowing tributes to the late human rights defender.
Just last week, the National Commission on the Human Rights and Freedoms transmitted anti-COVID-19 kits to the Kondengui Central and Principal Prisons, donated by the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP.
Handing over the equipment to officials of the Prison, The Vice Chairman of the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms said the initiative ties squarely with government’s commitment to check the spread of COVID-19 in the country’s prisons.
The National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms has been helping the government in the fight against COVID-19. The equipment included 5000 face masks, 107 cartons of soap, 107 hand-washing buckets, 3270 detergents, 19 sprayers, 3000 hand sanitisers and 1000 gloves.
