Cameroon backs new Covid-19 vaccine fund with over fcfa 600 million.
Cameroon has pledged over FCFA 600 million to a UK hosted Global Vaccine Summit to raise funds for the U.N backed public-private health alliance known as GAVI, with the goal of ensuring Vaccines are available to all.
The virtual gathering of more than 50 countries brought together 35 heads of state or government, as well as leaders of private sector organisations and civil society. Cameroon was fully represented by Elung Paul Che, Deputy Secretary General No 1 at the Presidency of the Republic.. The summit surpassed its target of raising 7.4 billion US dollar and instead raised 8.8 billion for the development and equitable worldwide distribution of COVID-19 and other vaccines.
In his remarks during the summit, UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said along with creation of a COVID-19 vaccine, nations should replenish funding for vaccines that already exist. Cameroon’s contribution to the U.N-backed public- private health alliance funds comes shortly after president Paul Biya made a similar donation for the African Union Fund for the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. In an official telegram addressed to President Paul Biya recently, Commission, the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, extended words of appreciation to the Cameroonian leader for his financial contribution to the continental body in the fight against the corona virus, saying it underlines his commitment towards progress and development on the continent.
