ECCAS foreign ministers meet: Adopt blueprint regional response against Covid-19.

Members of the Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Council of the Economic Community of Central African States, ECCAS, have adopted a blueprint regional response strategy to slow the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic in the 11-member economic bloc.

This follows a two-day meeting that was held at the headquarters of the institution in Libreville-Gabon mid last week, presided at by the Chairman of the Council of Ministers and Gabonese Minister in charge of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, Francophonie and Regional Integration, Alin Claude Billie By Nze.

Other subjects that dominated the confab included the examination of candidacy files for the posts of Vice Presidents and Commissioners for the body, the examination of the security situation in the Central African Republic, as well as formulation of a timetable for the next ordinary session of the Conference of Heads of State and Governments of the Economic Community of Central African States.

Cameroon was represented at the conference through video conference due to the restrictions imposed by coronavirus pandemic, by the Minister of External Relations, Lejeune Mbella Mbella, in the company of the Minister Delegate at the Ministry of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Paul Tasong.

The participants examined the new mode of living imposed by COVID-19, paying particular attention to the economic and social disequilibrium brought about by the pandemic. The conference comes in the wake of the extraordinary session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of Central African States which was held in December 2019, during which members states agreed to move the regional structure from a secretariat to a commission as the executive organ. The Economic Community of Central African States, ECCAS, is an organisation which is out to promote regional economic cooperation in Central Africa, with a view to achieving collective autonomy, raising the standard of living of its populations and maintaining economic stability through harmonious cooperation.

Last April 28, 2020 the President of the Republic ratified the revised Treaty Establishing the Economic Community of the Central African States, (ECCAS), signed in Libreville on 18 December 2019.
