Mitigating COVID-19: Senators, mayors donate to Yaounde prisons.
The Yaounde Central and Principal Prisons in the Centre Region have once again been equipped with preventive equipment intended to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the facilities.
The gifts which include over 500 mattresses, cartons of soap and a borehole equipped with a storage tank capable of storing 6, 000litres of water, have been donated by the seven senators and eight mayors in the Centre Region.
The gifts were handed over to the inmates through the administrator of the prison by the Governor of the Centre Region, Naseri Paul Bea.
“There will be a centre around here to detect those who test positive for COVID-19. Free testing shall be conducted”, the Governor said.
Speaking during the event, the City Mayor of Yaounde and one of the benefactors, Luc Messi Atangana, said they were motivated by the actions taken by the Head of State to check the spread of COVID-19 in the country. A view shared by the other benefactors.
“We took time to decide exactly what to do. We are happy that the Governor has appreciated our gesture”, said Senator Victor Elie Essomba Tsoungui, the initiator of the idea.
Speaking on behalf of the inmates, their representative, Jean Baptiste Guini Effa, thanked the donors while at the same time appreciating the recent presidential move to decongest penitentiary facilities in the country.
The Administrator of the Yaounde Central Prison, Hamadou Madi, for his part, said the gifts were coming at an opportune moment. The senators are envisaging extending their gesture to youths, in the near future.
The donation of anti-COVID-19 equipment to the Yaounde Central and Principal Prisons by Senators and Mayors in the Centre region is the latest in a series of similar gestures carried out by other bodies. A case in point is the donation late last week, by the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, of 5 000 face masks, 107 cartons of soap, 107 hand washing buckets, 3 270 detergents, 16 sprayers, 3 000 hand sanitizers and 1000 gloves to the inmates of the Yaounde Central and Principal Prisons.
