Cameroon road projects: Reduced construction costs prioritised.
Some proposals have been gathered on how government can reduce the cost of road construction projects.
The suggestions were assembled during a meeting chaired by the Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Njoumessi. During the meeting, particular attention was paid on the pre-qualification of partners likely to support the State in the implementation of the project to build and tar production units.
It is hoped that this will contribute to reducing the construction costs of road infrastructure. The Minister and the experts agreed that tar is a key component in road construction.
That explains why they want to boost the nation’s capacity in the production of the precious bitumen. They agreed that increasing production aptitude would avoid a situation where a few production units have to supply several road projects. When things work that way, “there is bound to be an increase in cost as the resource would have to be transported over longer distances to be made available at project sites”. Several other proposals were also made and experts hope the country would save millions when implemented.
The consultation also delved into pacification procedures, following the termination of the contracting process for the Ntui-Mankim section of the National Road Number 15.
The Minister and the experts expressed satisfaction with the evaluation of road projects across the nation.
This year, the Batchenga-Ntui-Yoko-Lena-Tibati project is the largest road project implemented by the Government of Cameroon. It covers some 380km and it is funded by six technical and financial partners. So far, the government has been able to mobilise a colossal sum of FCFA 360 billion for the project. The road faced a major setback; a delayed 400metre-bridge over river Sanaga.
However, the project has taken shape after the bridge was completed. Given the magnitude of the project, four companies have been sourced to carry out the work. It also features several socio-economic infrastructures that will improve the livelihoods of persons living along the stretch of road.
