Anti-COVID-19 measures: PM wants closer eye on markets, business centres.
The inter-ministerial committee charged with piloting government’s response effort against the coronavirus pandemic has discussed ways through which preventive measures against the pandemic can better be enforced especially in markets and other business centres where large crowds of people gather.
During a videoconference on Thursday June 11, the various Ministers concerned made presentations, each giving updates on how they are handling the situation in their respective areas of competence.
The Ministers of Trade and of Decentralization and Local Development each explained what they have been doing in order to ensure strict respect of the preventive guidelines in markets. While Decentralization Minister talked of the regular disinfection of all markets and the availability of hand-washing points within same, his counterpart of Trade harped on the respect of the opening and closing hours of markets by municipal authorities as per his recommendation. Another issue that came under discussion was the proper care administered to Covid-19 patients. In this regard, Centre Region Governor, Paul Naseri Bea who attended the videoconference, gave a general idea of the situation of persons who are being treated in various isolation centres across the Region.
The Centre Region Chief Executive also told the Prime Minister of specific administrative measures he has taken in order to ensure the strict respect of the preventive measures in place. The Governor, it would be recalled, had recently banned funeral and wake keep ceremonies within his administrative jurisdiction. Public Health Minister, Dr Manaouda Malachie, brought the PM up to speed with figures at as then, and explained other measures being taken by his ministry to bolster the anti-Covid-19 fight. Dr Manaouda also talked about the opening of more sampling centres especially in Yaounde and Douala as well as testing centres in all the ten Regions of the country. After the long exchange among the committee members, the conclusion was that the preventive measures were still being largely disrespected by the population - a thing, they agreed, was having a negative toll on overall efforts aimed at defeating the pandemic. \
Prime Minister Dion Ngute thus re-echoed the call for citizens to scrupulously respect all the barrier measures, which he said, are crucial for saving the lives of fellow compatriots.
The inter-ministerial committee meeting is a weekly rendezvous that enables government to evaluate the state of affairs with regard to the fight against Covid-19 in the country and adopt necessary steps in order to make ongoing efforts more effective and result–oriented.
