UNDP bolsters fight against COVID -19.
The Mayors of the seven councils that make up the Mfoundi Division of the Centre Region have received soap, buckets, hydro alcoholic gels, sprays and protective masks from the United Nations Development Agency, UNDP, to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic in their respective areas of command.
The equipment were donated on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, by the Assistant Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Agency, Alassane Ba, in the presence of the Secretary General in the Ministry of Decentralization and Local Development, Fred Ebongue Makolle.
“The UNDP supports an effort that the councils are already making. They have been at the forefront of the fight against the disease. The government has given its support and now it’s the turn of international partners,” said the Decentralization and Local Development SG, Fred Ebongue Makolle.
Speaking during the event, the Assistant Resident Representative of United Nations Development Agency, Alassane Ba, said the gesture falls in line with the agency’s mission of helping nations tackle various crises.
“The UNDP in partnership with the Ministry of Decentralization and Local Development is providing protection kits to fight COVID-19 in local communities. We have also launched a cash transfer process which will benefit 3000 vulnerable populations,” he said.
It was also announced during the event that a socio-economic impact assessment study of Covid-19 in local communities will be conducted with the support of the UNDP, the results of which will enable a better management of the virus in local communities in Cameroon.
An agreement to this effect was signed between the UN agency and the National Institute of Statistics. Other councils in Cameroon, including the Bamenda, Douala, Limbe and Maroua councils are due to receive their own share of protective equipment from the United Nations Development Agency, UNDP, in the days ahead.
The UNDP’s support is the latest initiative aimed at stemming the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in local communities in Cameroon. In April, President Paul Biya donated tons of protective equipment to all the 360 Sub-divisions of the country with particular focus on vulnerable populations estimated at FCFA 2billion to help curb the spread of the pandemic.
