Cameroon army announces victory in Bali but separatists say “we are holding on to our territory”.
There are conflicting reports on the progress of the war on ‘Ground Zero’ (the North West and South West regions where government forces are battling it with separatist forces said to be fighting to liberate their putative territory of Ambazonia).
While Brigadier General Nka Valere, Commander of the 5th Joint Military Region, announced on Tuesday that normalcy had returned to Bali, one of the strongholds of the ambaboys, following Operation Coup du Poing that resulted in the ‘neutralisation’ of some 13 separatists , the destruction of their camps and the recovery of weapons, separatist leaders say they are “holding on to our territory”.
Nka Valere who has built a reputation for ruthlessly clamping down on separatists since being placed at the helm of the military region displayed the war trophies with glee under the glare of cameras in Bamenda. He expressed his determination to pursue his operation to the logical end until the entire Momo Division up to Widikum is liberated.
But speaking to BBC Radio on Tuesday, Chris Anu, Secretary for Communication for the Ambazonia Interim Government, dismissed claims that the ambaboys were a spent force, owing to lack of funding and weapons.
“We are giving French Cameroonian soldiers the fight of their life”, he told BBC.
He announced that a big fund-raising operation on a county by county and a local government by local government basis was afoot to boost the war effort in view of liberating their land with Buea as the destination.
As if to corroborate Chris Anu, a source quoted by Cameroon News Agency discounted claims by Gen. Nka Valere of a waterloo for ambaboys as a “fat lie” serving as “propaganda aimed at satisfying their master”.
“In fact all the items they claimed to have been seized from the boys and killed 13 is a fat lie. Before the operation those fighters had retreated with their bases”, noted the source.
“It is true that during the house search, some Dane guns like those used during Lela ( Cultural festivities) were retrieved in some compounds like the XXX compound. So discard the information which to me is simply propaganda aimed at satisfying their master," Cameroon News Agency was told.
Quizzed on transition plans in Cameroon with the post of Vice-President for Anglophones, the communication chief for the Anglophone Separatists, retorted:
“We are not fighting for regime change but a free Ambazonia “.
On accusations that the separatists were recruiting child soldiers, Anu turned the heat on the Biya regime, saying it had no conscience on the rights of the child, citing the Ngarbuh massacre which saw several children killed in cold blood by the army.
