SOWEDA seeks new funding windows.
Board members of the South West Development Authority, SOWEDA, have instructed management to diversify its funding sources.
The call was made last Friday, June 19, in Buea during the first board meeting for the 2020 fiscal year. The board members observed that the authority’s activities have been stifled by the crisis in the North West and South West Regions, as well as the Covid-19 pandemic. Officials who run the authority on a daily basis were also challenged to take advantage of the plan elaborated to reconstruct the two regions.
Presiding at the meeting, the Board Chair, Herbert Apande Ediage, regretted that government subsidy to the authority has been on a decline. He said this steady drop in State support warrants that the authority begins seeking additional funding from other funders. “It is time to start looking for funding from elsewhere because what we are receiving as subsidies from government is dwindling as years go by,” the board chair said. He added that the plan elaborated by the Head of State, President Paul Biya, to reconstruct the two regions gives them “great hopes.” The objectives of the plan are not different from ours, the authority said. SOWEDA exists to facilitate development efforts for the Region, especially for local Communities.
The General Manager and other experts at the authority say they are waiting to collaborate with the specialist that would come from the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP.
It should be recalled that the UNDP is government’s key technical partner in the North West/South West Reconstruction Project. Some new officials appointed within the framework of reorganization to meet the latest challenges were also commissioned during the meeting.
