Cameroon-Chad electricity project gets fcfa 252.5 billion funding.
The World Bank, last week, announced it will be disbursing the sum of FCFA 252.5 billion as funding for the Cameroon-Chad Interconnection Electricity Project. The huge project comprises 12 sub projects aimed at increasing access to electricity in the Northern part of Cameroon and in Chad’s capital N’Djamena.
Having received partial funding from other sources, the World Bank funding through the International Development Association would increase the momentum of the project.
It should be recalled that the African Development Bank, AfDB, earlier this year announced a FCFA 144.5 billion support for the same project.
Announcing the World Bank disbursement, the bank said electricity shortages have largely contributed to the two countries’ inability to obtain their resilience desired. It added that the shocks caused by Boko Haram atrocities have made life more difficult for inhabitants of these two countries. The negative impact of the arid-like climate in the area has also not been helpful, the bank holds. Hopes are thus high that the project which is attracting several funders would put a smile on faces of people living in the two countries. The project will feature two major high-voltage lines - one between Ngaoundere and Maroua on the Cameroonian phase and another, between Maroua and N’Djamena in the Republic of Chad. Several other communities will be connected along the stretch of the Cameroon-Chad electricity grid. The World Bank in the communiqué that announced the loan disbursement said it hopes that the social safety nets accompanying the project will further rehabilitate the beneficiaries.
