COVID–19: KOICA assuages plight of physically–challenged.
The restrictions imposed by the novel coronavirus inevitably means the physically challenged most especially the visually-impaired are subjected to a double burden; self- confinement and physical or psychological disability.
It is for this reason that the Korea International Cooperation Agency, KOICA, has opted to extend a hand of solidarity to the Club for the Young Rehabilitated Blind of Cameroon known by the French language acronym as CJARC in the fight against COVID-19. Preventive equipment, food items and toiletries (including soap, hand washing stations, bed sheets, pillow cases, rice and vegetable oil) were donated to the Club for the Young Rehabilitated Blind of Cameroon by the Korea International Cooperation Agency on Thursday, June 18, 2020 in Yaounde.
“We know that CJARC takes care of blind people and disability, so the Korean government and KOICA decided to help them to overcome the COVID-19 and the challenges that come with it; that is why we decided to donate some food items and blankets and water containers to wash hands. We have plans to support the Cameroonian people to overcome the challenges that come with this health crisis,” said Yeon Je Ho, Resident Representative of the Korea International Cooperation Agency in Cameroon. The recipients have described the gesture as coming at an opportune moment.
“The choice of the content of the gifts is very interesting. As we fight against coronavirus, the physically-challenged, who are living in confinement, need to eat. KOICA has thought of it. We are really grateful to KOICA which is really a friend of the Club for the Young Rehabilitated Bind of Cameroon. KOICA has been supporting us since last year,” said Bertin Coco, Director of the Club for the Young Rehabilitated Blind of Cameroon.
For over 30 years now, the association has projected the might of people living with disabilities in general and the visually impaired in particular. Created in 2011 when bilateral relations between Cameroon and Korea clocked 50, the Korea International Cooperation Agency is Korean government’s main agency in charge of implementing development and grant aid programme. The opening of this office was also intended as an answer to the need for both countries to give a new impetus to their cooperation ties through concrete and tangible actions.
