COVID–19: MINCOM, UN System close ranks to fight hate speech, fake news.
Cameroon and the United Nations System are poised to band together to discourage hate speech in Cameroon as the country struggles to beat back the coronavirus pandemic.
The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Cameroon, Allegra Baiocchi, presented the UN agency’s project to fight hate speech and to sensitise the public to the impact of hate speech during the coronavirus pandemic to the Minister of Communication, Rene Emmanuel Sadi, on Friday, June 19, 2020 in Yaounde.
“Last year the Secretary General of the United Nations launched a plan to combat hate speech. Hate speech is a critical issue today for every country. It touches all aspects of political life and religious life. We were just talking about COVID-19 and how hate speech and fake news affect our COVID-19 response and how this has to be a priority”, said Allegra Baiocchi, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Cameroon.
“It is a priority for the United Nations. We have developed an action plan which I presented to the Minister of Communication. I wanted to get his advice, but also his support. So we have agreed to work together on putting this in action. We are lucky to have funding to already start working on this. We have agreed that we need to work at community level using radios. We need to work in schools to start educating children and youth and also, capacity building of journalists as well as anyone who uses social media. Today, anyone of us can be a producer of hate news or hate speech,” she said.
The United Nations System Organisations cover a wide variety of organizational entities (centres, agencies, organisations, commissions, programmes etc). It consists of the United Nations and its six principal organs.
