An evaluation and sensitization meeting on the coronavirus has rounded off in Bamenda with stakeholders of the Employment and Vocational Training sector poised to re-strategizing in a bid to improve the school resumption figures amidst a Covid-19-free environment.
The ceremony which took place at the conference hall of the Regional Delegation for Employment and Vocational Training for the North West saw in attendance all regional inspectors, divisional delegates and directors of training institutes. Following the outbreak of the Anglophone crisis, some state-run vocational institutions in the region suffered heavy infrastructural damage which left the structures managing through unorthodox means to survive.
With the outbreak of the coronavirus, government shut down schools in a bid to contain its spread. Within the recent government decision on schools resumption, these structures must re-fire while taking stock of the figures and employing better ways to improve them.
The ceremony was equally marked by a reception of anti-COVID-19 kits by participants for their remote localities. The gesture from United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) through the government of Cameroon is to enable a COVID-19- free society.
"These gifts which comprise 50 water storage containers of 50 liters each, 160 hand sanitizers and 50 cartons of soap is a gesture like no other. It is coming at a time when our schools must remain safe while students obtain knowledge. We took out today to brainstorm as to better improve on our services cognizant of diverse challenges and mapping out proper ways for improvement and this can only be done with a concertation with our divisional units whose daunting role and efforts are commendable", said the Director of Finance and Administration, Chrisantus Ngwatum, sitting in for the regional delegate .
Boyo, Bui, Momo, Donga Mantung, Menchum and Ngoketunjia divisions and its interior communities are at high risk of contamination should a positive case of the virus be reported. It is therefore imperative to map a way forward while embarking on a sensitization campaign.
Vocational training and empowerment continues to sustainably contribute to the wellness of the economy of the region with over 75 percent reliant on self- acquired skills to make a living. Carpenters, hair dressers, farmers, motor repairers amongst others, are benefactors of such initiatives. Though life cycle ratios vary over the craft works practised, it has however and continues to be an ideal and unique empowerment measure. It is therefore hoped with the launching of the new school year, enrolment will triple as many will delve into an opportunity to make ends meet. However it should be noted with the present hostilities many continue to cast doubts as to whether effective studies will be observed owing to threats of diverse sorts.
