SONATREL reviews operations.
The National Electricity Transportation Corporation, SONATREL, has been reviewing its activities, barely one year after it was created.
During the review on Monday June 22, 2020, the board members observed with satisfaction that the objectives of the firm are progressively being met. In the previous years, the production and distribution of electricity was in the hands of a single firm. The State observed that, that was not productive enough and consequently it created SONATREL to specialize in the distribution of the highly cherished utility. It was in this light that the new firm went full swing on January 01, 2019.
Speaking during the session, the Director General of SONATREL, Victor Mbemi Nyaknga, stated that the firm is in good shape. “We have come today to see the accounts of SONATREL for this first year of exercise on the transmission network. The conclusion is that the company is healthy”, the Director General said. “We can be classified among the most productive companies in Cameroon today”, Victor Mbemi Nyaknga added.
The GM of the firm sounded quite positive, saying they have been able to raise over FCFA 50 billion, in just one year.
In spite of the huge smiles, the authorities recognized that there is still much for them to accomplish. Victor Mbemi Nyaknga explained that their immediate project is to install three high-powered transformers to boost electricity distribution. The transformers in view are destined for Limbe, in the South West Region; Kondengui and Ahala in the Centre Region. “We are waiting for three other transformers to install in the Littoral Region”, he concluded.
Though the firm celebrates what they say is a successful year, their customers have yet another reading of their performance. Mary Shey, proprietor of a cold store at Ekounou in Yaounde, regrets that electricity supply has not been stable. “We are rarely notified on when electricity will be cut and even when it goes off, we are never sure when it returns. I have lost hundreds of thousands in fish as electricity sometimes goes off for as long as three days”, she lamented.
Others however say the supply has been moderate as they have learned to live and manage the blackouts. “I have a stand-by generator and a solar system that I use when electricity goes off”, explained Bruno Che, proprietor of a barbing saloon in Bamenda. He complained that when there is a fault on an electricity line, it often takes longer than it should, for workers to show up for repair works.
