MPs, govt ministers say local consumption is key to youth employment.
The consumption of locally-made goods especially that produced by the youth has been presented as a panacea to the problem of youth unemployment in Cameroon. Some government ministers including the Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education; Mines, Industries and Technological Development; and Trade, as well as some MPs including the Deputy Speaker of Cameroon’s National Assembly, Theophile Baoro , and another MP and Coordinator of the Parliamentary Network- Esperance Jeunesse, Joshua Osih, were speaking on the occasion of the first ever Economic Patriotism Day observed at the National Assembly on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at the National Assembly. “Three parliamentarians are coming together with Members of government and actors of the private sector to exchange on the importance of local consumption to boost youth employment,” said Coordinator of the parliamentary network-Esperance Jeunesse, Joshua Osih.
More than 250 young people from all the ten Regions of the country showcased home-made products, including cement, mineral water, soap, cooking oil, fish and chicken. “I urge each and every one of us to be true and genuine partners because our patriotism is based on the consumption of what we produce,” said the Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education, Mounouna Foutsou.
The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Theophile Baoro, said by consuming made-in-Cameroon products, Cameroonians will be saving close to FCFA 2, 000 billion which is lost every year to import.
The Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbaraga Atangana, congratulated the youth who are today actors of Cameroon’s local production chain. A message echoed by his counterpart of Mines, Industries and Technological Development, Gabriel Dodo Ndoke: “The development of this sector involves a lot of employment potential for our country. It is an important lever for our country’s march towards emergence.”
