Dozens arrested in Yaounde security crackdown.
A search of some quarters in Yaounde ordered by the regional delegate for national security, Ngah Didier, following the explosion of two improvised devices (EEI) on the night of June 20-21 has resulted in dozens of arrests and seizure of household equipment without receipts.
Security forces in Cameroon’s capital, Yaounde had since last Wednesday embarked on a thorough search operation which ran into the weekend.
After a thorough search was carried out in the Melen neighbourhood where one of the explosions is said to have occurred on the night of June 20-21, other search operations were carried out in the Emana, Etoudi, Obili and Biyem-Assi.
Although the order from the regional security boss called for only taxis, bags, luggage and other suspected areas to be searched, those who descended on the quarters with a high concentration of Anglophones at the weekend proceeded to demanding receipts for household appliances. Those who could not produce them had their goods seized, victims told The Horizon.
Dozens were arrested on Saturday and are still being held in detention, we learnt.
Since 2 am breaking Saturday, the entire Obili neighbourhood was surrounded by a heavy team of policemen, gendarme officers and military officers. Every house was being searched.
The roads from Carrefour Obili leading to Biyemassi were blocked as well as that leading to Chapel Obili. Those without valid identification documents were particularly targeted for arrest.
Defense authorities had ordered for systematic and unannounced checks to fish out any suspects who could in anyway be linked to the June 20-21 explosions.
Yaounde is currently under high security alert as debates over who to succeed 86-year-old Paul Biya animate the national scene.
Obilli and Biyemassi, which were targets of the weekend raids are predominantly Anglophone residential areas.
