UN re-echoes support for efforts to rebuild NW, SW.
The United Nations says it remains committed to assisting Cameroon in its efforts to rebuild the socio-economic fabric of the North West and South West Regions which have been shattered by a lingering armed conflict.
The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Cameroon, Allegra Baiocchi, made the disclosure in an audience granted her by Prime Minister Dr Joseph Dion Ngute on June 23.
The diplomat was at the Star Building for a farewell meeting with the Head of Government as she has come to the end of her three-year assignment in Cameroon. During the long conversation, the PM and the UN official reviewed issues related to the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the two English-speaking Regions and priority areas to be targeted.
“The United Nations is ready to stand by Cameroon in the follow-up to recommendations of the Major National Dialogue. This has to do with reconstruction, rehabilitation, more dialogue and also decentralization,” Baiocchi said.
Baiocchi and PM Dion Ngute also reviewed the situation of Covid-19 in the country and government’s response efforts.
“We talked about the epidemic, the humanitarian and the socio-economic response. We have noted that there has been a significant step in the decentralization of the COVID-19 testing. Cameroon is one of those countries that have put in place testing facilities in practically all the Regions. It’s excellent”, the UN official stated.
The Italian diplomat who is heading for a country in Central America for the same role told reporters of the fond memories she has about Cameroon. “It’s a magnificent country, I like its beauty. I told the PM that all the people I met and worked with have a very high engagement capacity. Their capacity is enormous. I am leaving with memories of a country quite full of potential”, Baiocchi confessed. Before leaving the Star Building, the UN official was handed a symbolic gift of an arts statue as a souvenir of her stay in the country.
