Human rights issues in time of Covid: Journalists fortified to combat stigma.
The respect for human rights in reporting Covid-19 was the core of a two-day seminar for journalists from the West, Centre, South and Littoral Region. Organized in Douala by the United Nations Human Rights Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication, the seminar that ran from 22-23 of June 2020, brought together over 40 press men and women. For two days the media practitioners gained skills on how to engage in reporting that will promote the rights of all and sundry during the global pandemic. It also came to the limelight that with the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, most people who have been tested positive including their close relatives are suffering from stigmatization. With this sad reality, the media men and women were urged to do more reports geared towards fighting against stigma.
Participants equally agreed that there is a lot of negative perception on Covid-19 and so many people are yet to believe that it’s a reality. In one of the presentations, Timothy Franklin Kiven of the United Nations Human Rights Commission explained that in human rights principles, legality, necessity and proportionality should always be taken into consideration before decisions are taken especially in emergency situations. However, he said it is not the case during the periods of lockdown as some people died at home because they could not access the hospital. Emergency measures during crisis should not last for long and should be reviewed often, he concluded.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Interim Regional Delegate of Communication for the Littoral, Sandrine Ngodi, urged journalists to communicate for behavioral change, life saving and inspire hope in the people. At the end of the workshop, participants recommended that the authorities concerned should provide information to journalists. They also advocated that government communication should be consistent and credible.
