124 illegal emigrants return home.
Although their return home was unexpected, the smiles on the faces of the 124 Cameroonians who have just been repatriated from Niger, were as broad as they were during the away trip. Their harrowing experiences on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea account for this paradox. The 124 Cameroonians (out of the 162 expected) comprised mainly young people, most of whom are between 20 and 30 years old, including newborns. These are ambitious Cameroonians, some of whom had given up their jobs, and dreamt of going for greener pastures.
“I decided to come back because the context linked to the coronavirus no longer allowed me to continue the adventure. It was hell, I’m very happy to return home,” said Aboubacar, one of the migrants. They arrived at the Yaounde-Nsimalen International Airport on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, on board an EU special chartered flight form Niger, overseen by the International Organisation for Migration. The migrants were turned back on the Mediterranean corridor leading to Europe three months ago, after leaving the transit centers of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Niger.
On hand to welcome them were officials from the Ministries of Public Health, Social Affairs, Territorial Administration, the International Organisation for Migration and civil society. They would later be encouraged by these officials, geared towards facilitating their return to their families and their eventual reintegration into society.
To guard against any possible spread of the coronavirus pandemic, the aircraft was thoroughly disinfected before they disembarked. Thereafter, they were screened by the airport health team. The ex-migrants will be accommodated for two days in a local hotel before regaining their families. The arrivals are the latest within the framework of a project for the reintegration and protection of migrants which started in June 2017. To date, more than 4,000 Cameroonians have successfully reunited with their families, while 1,700 have been reintegrated into society.
